How Long Does a Dental Implant Take, Start to Finish?

One of the first questions patients ask about implants is how long the whole treatment will take. The honest answer is that it depends on the site, the bone available and your general health — but the stages themselves follow a fairly predictable sequence.

The first visit is an examination with radiographs, and often a scan, to check the amount and quality of bone at the site. This is also when your medical history, gum condition and any habits such as smoking are discussed, because all of them influence healing.

If the gums need treatment first, or a tooth still has to be removed, that comes before implant placement. Allowing an extraction site to settle is common, and skipping this step tends to cause more problems than it saves in time.

Placing the implant itself is usually a single appointment carried out under local anaesthesia. Most patients return to routine activities the next day, with simple aftercare instructions for the first week.

The longest part is osseointegration — the period in which bone grows against the implant surface and holds it firmly. This commonly takes a few months and cannot be shortened by wishing it so; a crown loaded too early risks the implant failing.

Once healing is confirmed, an impression or scan is taken and the final crown is fitted, sometimes after a short healing-abutment stage to shape the gum. A review appointment follows, and thereafter the implant is checked at your regular visits.

In some cases where bone and stability allow, an interim tooth can be provided earlier so you are not left with a visible gap. Whether that is appropriate can only be decided after examination.
