What Does a Periodontist Treat, and When Should You See One?

A Periodontist is a dentist with postgraduate training in the gums and the bone and tissues that hold the teeth in place. While a general dentist manages everyday gum care, a periodontist focuses on diagnosing and treating disease in that supporting structure.

The most common reason to see one is bleeding gums. Gums that bleed while brushing are not normal, and are usually the earliest sign of inflammation. At this stage — gingivitis — the condition is generally reversible with professional cleaning and a change in daily technique.

If inflammation continues, it can progress to periodontitis, where the gum separates from the tooth and forms a pocket, and the bone support gradually reduces. Lost bone does not grow back on its own, so the aim of treatment shifts to stopping further loss and keeping things stable.

Other reasons to be assessed include gums that have receded and made teeth look longer, persistent bad breath, a tooth that has started to feel loose or has drifted, tenderness or pus around a tooth, and being told at a check-up that you have deep gum pockets.

Treatment usually begins non-surgically: charting the pockets, scaling and cleaning the root surfaces, and coaching on the areas your brushing is missing. Where deep pockets remain at the review, surgical or laser-assisted procedures may be considered. Periodontal treatment then continues as maintenance at intervals suited to your case.

Gum health also matters before implants, because an implant relies on healthy bone and tissue around it. That is why gum stabilisation comes first in an implant plan.

At Swasthya Advanced Dental Care & Implant Centre, periodontal treatment is carried out by Dr. Gajulavarthi Joel Sandeep, MDS, Implantologist and Periodontologist, at both the Guntur and Narasaraopet clinics.
