How Long Do Dental Crowns Last, and What Shortens Their Life?

A well-made crown can serve for many years, but no dentist can promise a fixed number. What decides the outcome is less the crown itself than the tooth and gum underneath it.
Material plays a part. Zirconia and ceramic crowns are widely used for their strength and natural appearance, while metal-ceramic crowns remain a dependable option in some situations. The right choice depends on the position of the tooth, the biting forces on it and how much natural tooth remains.
The commonest reason a crown needs replacing is not the crown breaking but decay forming at its margin, where the crown meets the tooth. That margin has to be cleaned as carefully as a natural tooth surface, including between the teeth.
Gum health matters too. If the gum recedes, the margin can become exposed and visible, and an untreated gum problem can undermine the support of the tooth the crown sits on.
Habits shorten crown life more than most people expect. Grinding or clenching, chewing ice or hard shells, and using teeth as tools all place stress on ceramic. A night guard may be advised where grinding is present.
Regular check-ups let a small problem at the margin be found and repaired before the crown or the tooth beneath is lost.
Crowns and bridges are planned at Swasthya Advanced Dental Care & Implant Centre in Guntur and Narasaraopet after examining the tooth, the bite and the surrounding gum. Book a consultation to discuss which option suits your tooth.
