Teeth Whitening: What to Know Before You Book

Whitening lightens the natural tooth structure using a peroxide-based agent. Understanding what it can and cannot change avoids disappointment.

Surface staining from tea, coffee, tobacco or paan is often improved considerably. Deeper discolouration — from an injury, from certain medicines taken in childhood, or from ageing of the tooth — responds less predictably, and in some cases a veneer or crown is the more suitable option.

Crowns, veneers and fillings do not change colour with whitening. If you have visible restorations at the front, they may need to be replaced afterwards to match the new shade, and that should be planned before you begin.

An examination comes first for a practical reason: whitening an untreated cavity, exposed root surface or inflamed gum is uncomfortable and can make matters worse. Cleaning and any necessary treatment are completed before whitening.

Temporary sensitivity to cold during and shortly after treatment is common and usually settles. A desensitising agent may be recommended, and the schedule can be adjusted if sensitivity is troublesome.

Results are not permanent. How long the shade holds depends largely on diet and habits, and periodic top-ups may be needed. No responsible clinic can guarantee a specific shade.
